I just finished reading
Joseph Boyden's 2008 Giller Prize winning novel,
Through Black Spruce. I happen to think it's brilliant...and would be brilliant as a play (because I'm partial) or film (because, well, it would).

Boyden is an incredibly gifted writer/storyteller. His latest effort follows the younger generations of the Bird family; their story began in his first novel
Three Day Road. Will, the son of Xavier from
Three Day Road, lies in a coma in the hospital in Moosonee. Annie, his niece, sits by his bedside. Both recount, in their own way, the heartbreaking road that led them to this place...I won't say anymore, other than that I highly recommend picking
Through Black Spruce up. And, while you're at it, start with
Three Day Road. The first novel isn't crucial to understanding the story of the second, but it can't hurt. And they are both wonderful Canadian books.
